Mountain Training UK - Lowland Leader Award

Lowland Leader Award

As an Approved provider by MOUNTAIN TRAINING UK, We are pleased to announce our Lowland Leader Award Training & Assessment Course and Expedition Skills Module dates.

The Lowland Leader Award has established itself as the award for those taking groups out in lowland areas of the UK and benefits from Mountain Training's tried and tested training and assessment structure to give leaders a great foundation in what they do. Outlook Adventures runs both training and assessment courses for the Lowland Leader Award.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Courses are ideal for anyone who wishes to lead groups of people in lowland areas of the UK. The course is of particular relevance to those who lead:

• Local walking clubs or groups.

• Volunteers for societies or organisations leading walks.

• Teachers involved with DofE expedition groups.

• Schools looking to train volunteers to help oversee expedition activities in lowland areas.

• Gold DofE participants who have completed their DofE award and would like to progress to leading groups.

• As a first step into the outdoor industry.

Expedition Skills Module

The Expedition Skills Module is an additional module available to walking leaders. It's an opportunity to increase your skills where you will be trained and assessed to lead groups on multi day camping expeditions. The flexibility of the module makes it useful for Lowland Leaders, Hill & Moorland and Mountain Leaders in terrain and conditions within the scope of their respective leadership award.   The Expedition Skills Module is ideal for those involved with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award training (among other things) because the skills covered apply to expeditions using commercial campsites as well as wild camping. It also looks at the important (and often overlooked) skill of remote supervision - the key ingredient in safe and successful DofE expeditions and similar programmes that promote good learning outcomes.

IS IT FOR ME?

When you register for either the Lowland Leader or Hill and Moorland Leader scheme you'll automatically be registered for the Expedition Skills Module.   The prerequisites for the Expedition Skills Module are as follows:

  • You must have passed a walking leader assessment (Lowland, Hill and Moorland or Mountain)
  • You must have logged an absolute minimum of 10 overnight camps; ideally in a variety of contexts
  • You must have assisted with at least two group camps (these can be included in your 10 personal camps)
